Literati Painting: China’s Unique Art Form

Ben Wang delves into the incredible art form of Literati Painting, from its birth in the Song dynasty, to its blossoming during the Ming, and its continued resonance into the 20th century. In The Wake: Japanese Photographers Respond To 3/11

As part of a series of of programs dedicated to the traumatic experience of the catastrophic earthquake and tsunami that struck northeast Japan in March 2011, this exhibition reveals a stunning range of photographic responses to the disaster and the artistic paths that lie ahead as Japan continues to rebuild.

 

Trace the Future: Photographer Naoya Hatakeyama (2015)
Film Screening | June 10th, 7 PM
This award-winning documentary follows artist Naoya Hatakeyama as he photographs the devastated landscape of his hometown, Rikuzentakada, after 3/11. Renowned for meticulous photographs that explore the relationship between humankind and nature, Hatakeyama suffered enormous loss on 3/11, losing his mother and his family home in the tsunami.MAP

 

THE MET BREUER (THE METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART)
Nasreen Mohamedi

As one of its inaugural exhibitions,The Met Breuer, presents one of the most significant artists of post ­Independence India, Nasreen Mohamedi (1937–1990). The exhibition represents the first museum retrospective of the artist’s work in the United States.

Mariam Ghani on What We Left Unfinished

A talk around Ghani’s long-term research, film, and dialogue project centered around five unfinished Afghan feature films shot, but never edited, between 1978 and 1992: years that encompass the Afghan Communist coup d’état, the Soviet invasion and withdrawal, the handover of power to a mujahidin coalition, and finally dissolution into civil war.”MAP

Bouchra Khalili: The Mapping Journey Project

Featuring a series of videos that details the stories of eight individuals who have been forced by political and economic circumstances to travel illegally and whose covert journeys have taken them throughout the Mediterranean basin.MAP

Mariam Ghani’s gigantic mural, commissioned as part of the Museum’s year-long project “Nonstop Metropolis: The Remix,” depicts a map of Queens comprised of colored blocks, each representing languages that are disappearing from the world, but are still spoken in the remarkable polyglot borough of Queens.MAP

Lived Experiences brings together three artists whose recent works revolve around performances of lived experiences of ‘other’. Ryohei Tanaka: Etchings

Renowned for the fine detail and intricate effects that he achieves in his etchings, Ryohei began his career studying etching under Professor Furuno in 1963 and became a member of the Kyoto Etchers Group one year later. He has won a numerous awards in Japan, Europe and the U.S., and today is one of the most popular Japanese contemporary print artists.MAP

Vikram Divecha’s “Warehouse Project” blurs the distinction between Alserkal Avenue as a cultural community and the industrial area that surrounds it, conflating art, commerce and commodities. The artist has bartered the exhibition space given to him with a general trading company requiring storage facilities, in exchange for the goods to be exhibited.MAP

Roppongi Crossing 2016: My Body, Your Voice

Staged by the museum triennially since 2004, Roppongi Crossing is an ongoing series offering a comprehensive survey of the wide spectrum of Japanese contemporary art. The 5th edition features different methods of art production by 20 artist groups, selected by the curators from Japan, South Korea and Taiwan, to examine the relationship between society and art today.
