FIELD REVIEW Past Editions

In October 2016, ACAW launched FIELD REVIEW, a semi-annual online journal providing a platform for writers, curators, and art historians to critically engage with contemporary art discourse. As an extension of the FIELD MEETING art forum, each issue of FIELD REVIEW explores pressing themes and artistic developments within specific regions.

The inaugural issue, FIELD REVIEW: South Asia, presented six commissioned essays examining the rise of contemporary art historical frameworks in the region alongside the evolving role of art criticism and writing. Focusing on abstraction, the essays investigated connections between visual artists and other cultural producers—poets, filmmakers, musicians, philosophers, and architects—offering broader socio-political and psychological insights. Following this, the second issue, FIELD REVIEW: Middle East, developed in collaboration with ACAW Consortium Partner ArteEast, featured seven case studies exploring dynamic creative movements across the MENA region, including inaugural museum exhibitions, satellite biennials, design fairs, and emerging collectives. Together, these issues reflect FIELD REVIEW’s efforts to foster deeper critical engagement with contemporary art across Asia and beyond.
