FIELD MEETING Past Editions

Introduced as ACAW’s signature forum in 2014, FIELD MEETING is best understood as an exhibition in the form of a two-day forum centered around the innovative medium of lecture performance. The program invites up to 40 artists and arts professionals to develop and present newly conceived performances, lecture performances, and lively discussions as an extension of their most compelling practices. Prominent institutions have hosted FIELD MEETING editions, including the Asia Society Museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and many others.

Over 200 leading artists have showcased their creative processes to thousands of influential audiences across the United States, the Middle East, and Europe, effectively bridging intellectual inquiry with an artistic practice including: Cao Fei (Beijing), Charwei Tsai (Paris & Taipei) Korakrit Arunanondchai (New York & Bangkok), Lu Yang (Shanghai), Jitish Kallat & Shilpa Gupta (Mumbai), Sun Xun (Beijing), Lee Mingwei (Paris & Taipei), Manal al Dowayan (Dhahran & Dubai), Patty Chang (Los Angeles), Naeem Mohaiemen (New York), Alfredo & Isabel Aquilizan (Manila & Brisbane), Burçak Bingöl (Istanbul), Rashid Rana (Lahore), Tiffany Chung (Houston), Simon Fujiwara (Berlin), Song Dong (Beijing), Taus Makhacheva (Dagestan), Shezad Dawood (London), Moe Satt (Yangon), Arahmaiani Feisal (Yogyakarta & Tibet). Also contributing to the discourse were curators, writers, and cultural leaders such as Defne Ayas (Rotterdam & Istanbul), Mami Kataoka (Tokyo), Philip Tinari (Beijing), Suhanya Raffel (Hong Kong), Holland Cotter (New York), and Natasha Ginwala (Berlin & Colombo), alongside interdisciplinary thinkers including Umashankar Manthravadi (Bangalore), Sarah Rifky (Cairo & Boston), Wafaa Bilal (Najaf) and many more.

Participants present their work to an exclusive audience of over 300 US-based curators, scholars, and museum professionals. Underscoring current practices and initiatives in Asia more broadly, FIELD MEETING initiates lasting relationships and collaborations between artists, art professionals, and organizations in the United States and Asia—in a timelier and more nuanced fashion than any other event of its kind. FIELD MEETING demonstrates how the “art-forum-as-exhibition” model nurtures ongoing benefits shaping the future of artistic discourse and the field. Presenting artists and professionals have attested to its impact in refining their creative voice and advancing their practice. Many participants have reported gaining greater clarity on their core inquiries, deepening their understanding of the fundamental concepts driving their work, and recognizing their creative strengths and challenges. FIELD MEETING has also amplified the visibility of many lesser-known artists and professionals, directly leading to invitations to major international art programs, biennials, residencies, and exhibitions.
