On
behalf of Asian Contemporary Art Consortium (ACAC) we are pleased
to invite contemporary art establishments in New York to join
Asian Contemporary Art Week, (ACAW), scheduled for May 22 through
27, 2006. To exclusively show Asian artists is not a prerequisite.
However, Asian Contemporary Art Week is an opportunity to schedule
and promote an exhibition or public program that involves an
Asian or Asian American artist or artists.
Now
in its fourth year ACAW continues to attract leading New York
City galleries and museums in a citywide event comprising of
exhibitions, receptions, lectures, performances, and public
programs focusing on the broad spectrum of artworks produced
by Asian contemporary artists working in their home countries
and abroad. In addition to the exhibitions and receptions, the
Week has featured leading curators, collectors and artists,
including Vasif Kortun, Shirin Neshat, Shahzia Sikander, Okwui
Enwezor as well as Gary Garrels, Dan Cameron, Francesco Bonami,
Yuko Hasegawa, Apinan Poshyananda, Mariko Mori, Kent Logan,
and Hou Hanru.
ACAW
Event Scope
ACAW
06 plans to consolidate its past successes with a focus on Video
Art. Asian video artists are some of the best recognized internationally,
with Zarina Bhimji at the last Documenta, Jun Nygen Hatsushiba
at the Istanbul biennale 2003, and Nalani Malani at the New
Museum recently. We have invited Barbara London, of the Museum
of Modern Art; Melissa Chiu, Director of Asia Society Museum;
and Yu Yeon Kim, Independent Curator, to curate an exhibition
of video works that will be presented in ACAC member galleries
and museums throughout the week.
Thus
in addition to various exhibitions and receptions, the video
exhibition will be a highlight of ACAW 2006, which focuses on
New Media. About 50 to 60 works will be compiled through nominations
and video calls, from which the mentioned curatorial team will
select about 25 works for the final exhibition. Participating
galleries may choose to partake in the video program in conjunction
to their own exhibition programs. (Please see participation
levels & registration form)
